Three Sistahs Press is a publishing company with a focus on books written by women of color.

Our mission is to ensure that the original voices of women of color continue to resonate  throughout the world and move them from the margins of society to center as the world hears their collective voice.

We do as Sojourner Truth said in 1867, “I am sittin’ here among you to watch; and every once and awhile I will come out and tell you what time of night it is.” And by that we mean that we will continue to publish media that reflects our Vibrant Voices, Sassy Spirits, and our quest to Tell Truths!

Still Swingin' by Tonya Maria Matthews

Like Lucille Clifton before her, Matthews politicizes the magic of hips that are “wide as hell.” She let’s readers in on the mystery and often the fear of black girl hips hat can ‘stop crap games on shady ghetto corners. Wide enough to birth fat black baby boys.”

She tells us to swing proud, swing wide, swing universal and always swing love. A young, womanist voice, Matthews’ poems are not for those who believe in art for art’s sake. Matthews is clear about where she stands as a woman today, historically where she has been, and where we need to be going as a people.

–Jessica Care moore-Poole, from the introduction.

Tonya Maria Matthews is a “poet, scientist and hip hop academic.” She is well known and respected for her artistry as a spoken word diva, as much as for her rapid fire lyricism on the page. Matthews holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She was born in Washington, D.C., grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland and currently serves as the CEO and President of the Michigan  Science Center.

Broken Utterances by Michelle Diane Wright

Broken Utterances connects the seemingly disparate voices of twenty Black women of the 1800′s, and weaves a cohesive web revealing surprising influences not only upon each other, but also on the experiences of Black women today. It is an examination of how the unique position of the African American woman provides her with the ability to dissect the ills of society and offer distinctive insight for positive transformation. The book is a multi-media work featuring primary texts, biographies, original illustrations and translations into contemporary vernacular.

Michelle earned a B.A. in English and Art History from Dartmouth College, an M.A. in Black Studies and an M.S. in Political Science from The Ohio State University. For five years she published natural Alternatives, an Afrikan centered guide for holistic living. Michelle edited both The Case of Marshall Eddie Conway, a book exploring the4 legal battles of the former Black Panther and political prisoner, and Broken Utterances: An Anthology of 19th Century Black Women’s Social Thought. Michelle has been published in the Western Journal of Black Studies, The Afro American Newspaper, among other national publications. Also an artist, Michelle has exhibited at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center in Baltimore. She is also a Professor of History and heads the Africana Studies Department at the Community College of Baltimore County, Maryland.

Titles and Authors

Set in the 1800s in the mountains of North Carolina, Beyond the Crossroad is the journey of Caroline–a journey that is both physical and psychological. She is given or sold from owner to owner, encountering other re-enslaved Black people along the way. Her “owners” see her as a commodity and not as a person, and each gives her a different name, a name meaningful to themselves but not to her. Although Caroline answers to those names to survive, she always knows who she is. At the moment when bondage has stripped her of virtually everything, she chooses life over death, and asserts, “I AM CAROLINE!” Now she is ready to risk everything for freedom. Now she is at the crossroad.

“Eugenia Collier has written an absorbing novel that dramatically exposes the domestic terrorism that held Black people captive for a generation after the legal end of slavery. What emerges from the pages of this novel is a specter that at once horrifies and enrages, compelling us to go ‘Beyond the Crossroad’ as a compassionate traveler.”

About Three Sistahs Press

Three Sistahs Press was founded in 2004 by Natalie Stokes-Peters, Jadi Omawale, and Michelle Diane Wright. In 2012, Stokes-Peters assumed full responsibility for the press due to other career desires in academia for Michelle and Jadi, that led to them resigning from the company. Although the operation of the press slowed dramatically, Stokes-Peters resumed operations in 2014 leading to the forthcoming book by Ruby Lee Gamble titled, The Other Side of the Broom, the first in a series, about marriage in the Black community.

Natalie earned a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1989. She went on to work with Procter & Gamble for 13 years with managerial responsibilities in manufacturing, logistics, organizational capability and distribution systems. In 2002 Natalie “retired early” from P&G to pursue her passion in book publishing. Later that year she joined the staff of an independent book publisher as an intern and has since become the publisher. She has worked with award-winning and best-selling authors on re-print and new release titles, in both print and e-book formats. In 2009 Natalie started a greeting card company, Adinkra Creations, which specializes in personalized hand-made cards, which she still operates in addition to her publishing projects.
