Broken Utterances: A Selected Anthology of 19th Century Black Women's Social Thought

Selected as Top Ten Best Black Books of 2008

Michelle Diane Wright, Editor

Gender, race, and class adversities faced by African American women in the 21st century have not altered drastically from those tackled by our ancestors of the 19th century. Broken Utterances connects the seemingly disparate voices of 20 Black women of the 1800’s, and weaves a cohesive web revealing surprising influences not only upon each other, but also on the experiences of Black women today. It is an examination of how the unique position of the African American woman provides her with the ability to dissect the ills of society and offer distinctive insight for positive transformation. The book is a multi-media work featuring primary texts, biographies, and original illustrations.

"For too long, the unique perspective of the African-American female has languished in the shadows of intellectual thought. This treatise lays the groundwork for a long overdue appreciation of a score of visionary sisters who were ready to lead their people over a hundred years ago. An admirable, exhaustive, encyclopedic effort to elevate these brave women, even if belatedly, to their rightful place as very important voices in the black struggle for freedom. " Kam Williams

Still Swingin': New and Selected Poems from These Hips

"These poems are laced with irony and a satirical edge that forced me to laugh aloud, nod my head in agreement, and catch my breath"
Linda Joy Burke, Black Issues Book Review

Tonya Maria Matthews

Still Swingin’ is a reprint of a book that Three Sistahs Press felt had gone out of print prematurely. In fact it was at the press’ launch party in September 2004 that Matthews approached the publishers about bringing her book back into print. Matthews is perhaps better known in her east coast base of Baltimore as the spoken word artist JaHipster. The publishers felt that Matthews’ strong poetic voice showed up as well on the page as it did when the poet performed. That quality - well written, strong poetry - combined with Matthews’ established audience and packed performance schedule would provide a win-win as the publishers’ first publication. Still Swingin’ also fit nicely within Three Sistahs Press’ mission to publish a mix of out-of-print, as well as new works by women of African descent they feel strongly about.

Still Swingin’ has a new introduction by poet Jessica Care moore-Poole, well known spoken word artist and publisher in her own right. The book also has a boldly designed new cover and inside design which boasts new graphics and illustrations fronting each section. Matthews revised some of the 21 poems and added a few new poems. Matthews is an award winning poet, a recent recipient of a Hurston-Wright fellowship and a 2005 recipient of a Maryland State Arts Grant for her poetry. Matthews completed her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from prestigious Johns Hopkins University.
